TU/e offers a Business Information Systems (BIS) masters degree program. Two information systems groups at TU/e (within Computer Science and Industrial Engineering) have organized the BIS masters program. The focus is on business process modeling and analysis. The program includes courses on Business Process Management, Business Process Management Systems, Process Mining, Electronic Business Architectures and Systems, Business Process Simulation, IT-governance, etc. The BIS program has about 70 MSc students. There are about 20 PhD students in the broader BPM area.TU/e hosts many well-known BPM researchers. Various rankings and evaluations show that TU/e is leading in both research and teaching. TU/e is ranked 34th on the Academic Ranking of World Universities in Computer Science (Shanghai ranking 2011), making it the 4th European University. In 2009, TU/e was ranked first on the international University-Industry Research Cooperation (UIRC) scoreboard illustrating the strong cooperation with industry. The undergraduate specialization in BPM currently consists of three courses (CIS 4120, 4130, 4140 and 4190) that cover the gamut from business process analysis and modeling (BPMN) to BPMS implementation, the inclusion and use of web services, and complex event processing. This is in addition to required CIS courses in project management, database, general modeling and analysis, and the typical range of business courses (e.g., accounting, marketing, finance, operations, strategy) required of all business degree graduates. Students of this program can choose from a variety of electives in BI, process management and enterprise architecture to achieve greater depth or breadth. The four BPM courses are taught using problem-based and experiential learning modalities and a team-based approach. All courses have a real-world project associated with them. The undergraduate area of emphasis in BPM currently consists of two courses. The general outcome of the first course, required of all MIS majors, is to improve student’s understanding and skills in terms of modeling, improving and managing organizational work systems, especially the understanding of the process and technology components of these systems. The course focuses on BPM both as management discipline and as a technology (BPMS). It covers a gamut of topics from business process analysis, modeling (BPMN) and simulation to BPMS implementation, the use of web services, and process redesign methodologies. The second course, an elective course, focuses on BPMS, SOA (Service-oriented architectures) and BDMS (Business Decision/Rules Management Systems) as a new environment for developing and executing process-based information systems. Students build a number of systems using a commercial BPMS_SOA_BDMS environment. The two BPM courses are in addition to other required MIS Major courses (seven courses are required for a major) in Database Management, Project Management, Java Programming, Network-Based Application Development, and Systems Analysis and Design. Many of the required MIS courses use and integrate the BPM concepts and skills acquired in the BPM courses. The MIS major builds on the Terry College’s common business core, which includes course work in accounting, economics, business law, mathematics, statistics, information systems, finance, marketing, production, and management. Often, the common core is completed before taking course work in the MIS program. Students in this program may choose from a variety of electives to achieve greater depth or breadth in BPM related topics. All BPM courses incorporate real-world projects to enhance the relevance and quality of the student’s professional experience. Number of Faculty: Approx. 10The BPM Career Program at the University of Liechtenstein is aimed at highly qualified and motivated talents with a firm interest in management and technology. It provides students with the opportunity to work in a professional environment while, at the same time, being enrolled in the accredited Business Process Master Program at the University of Liechtenstein. Students are thus provided with a unique environment that allows them to directly apply academic knowledge in practice.
The BPM Career Program is designated for graduates of Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Studies, Economics, Information Science as well as both Natural and Engineering Sciences. Candidates need to possess a first qualifying university degree and to be motivated to complete a challenging program while, at the same time, working in practice.
The application process is competitive. Interested persons submit their application to the University of Liechtenstein. The applicants’ eligibility is evaluated by both the University of Liechtenstein and the supporting organization. Students are enrolled in the BPM Career Program, if they are accepted by both the University and the participating organization. Students who apply for the BPM Career Program are asked to nominate 2-3 organizations they are most interested in (see Web link).
