Class Notes: BPM Research and Education – Evidence-Based Research – What We Know, What We Don’t and Why We Should Find Out.
In all of the literature on BPMN there has been little focus on how BPMN is actually used by modellers. With his colleague Jan Recker (whose Article on BPMN modelling appeared in the May Update), Michael zur Muehlen set about to gather some data on the subject. Readers of this Column will be rewarded with a review of the surprising results revealed in the study.

Michael zur Muehlen is Assistant Professor of Information Systems at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, where he directs the SAP/IDS Scheer Center of Excellence in Business Process Innovation. Michael's research interests center around the organizational aspect of BPM technology, risk-aware process management, and process support for managerial decision-making. An active contributor to standards in the BPM area, Michael is a life fellow of the Workflow Management Coalition and chairs the WfMC working group "Management and Audit". SAP Research, the US Army, the Australian Research Council, and private sponsors have funded his research. Michael has presented his research in 20 countries. He is the author of a book on workflow-based process controlling, 12 journal articles and numerous book chapters, conference and working papers on workflow and process management. He holds a PhD and an MS in Information Systems from the University of Muenster, Germany. His research and publications can be accessed at http://www.cebpi.org.
