Generically, this could refer to any diagram that helped communicate information about a business process. Most practitioners use it is as a synonym for a process flow diagram. Process flow diagrams come in a variety of forms. Some only show the sequence of activities. Others show the flow of information, money or products from one activity to the next. Some show activities without organizing them according to how they are managed, but business people often use swimlanes to not only show sequence, but who is responsible for different activities. There are many popular notations for process flow diagrams. Among the most popular today is the OMG BPMN notation. Also important is ARIS’s EPC notation which is popular among ERP developers.
